What is Doctors House?

The house is a Victorian-era home, a style that has almost vanished from Glendale; only a handful of such houses survive in the city. It stands inside Brand Park, a city park, so it has a green setting rather than a busy street frontage.

Today it serves as a small house museum. Responsibility for its upkeep sits with the city's parks and recreation staff, which keeps it in public hands. The park setting also gives room to walk around the outside of the house before or after a visit.

History of Doctors House

The house dates from 1888, nearly four decades before Route 66 was commissioned in 1926. Its value has been recognized at two levels: nationally, through a National Register listing, and locally, through Glendale's own register of historic resources and districts. That double recognition reflects how rare a surviving house of this period has become in the city.

Visiting Doctors House: tips

The museum keeps limited opening times, so check the schedule before you make the detour. Restrooms, wheelchair access and parking are available, and the house is suitable for children. Allow 30 to 45 minutes inside, plus time to stretch your legs in Brand Park.

Several bigger attractions are close. The Autry Museum of the American West is about 2.4 miles away, the Los Angeles Zoo about 2.5 miles, and the Travel Town Museum about 2.7 miles, so the house fits easily into a day of Glendale sightseeing.
