The Broad

The Broad is a Grand Avenue museum devoted to contemporary art, in downtown Los Angeles, CA, less than a mile off the old road. It opened in 2015 and carries the name of Eli and Edythe Broad, the philanthropists who paid for the building that holds their collections. General admission to the permanent collection is free, which makes it an easy cultural stop at the end of Route 66.

What is The Broad?

The museum was built as a home for the Broad art collections, which focus on contemporary work. It stands on Grand Avenue, a downtown street it shares with the Museum of Contemporary Art, so the two are often visited together.

Entry to the permanent collection galleries costs nothing. Some special exhibitions and events are ticketed and may be priced differently, so check ahead if something particular catches your eye. For a traveler who has spent weeks looking at roadside signs, motels and old gas stations, a room full of recent art is a sharp and often welcome change of scenery.

History of The Broad

The Broad's doors opened on September 20, 2015, which makes it one of the newer major museums in downtown Los Angeles. Eli and Edythe Broad funded the building to give their collections a permanent public home, and the free general admission reflects that aim of sharing the art widely. Its site next to MOCA put two major contemporary art collections within a short block of each other.

Visiting The Broad: tips

Free to visit for the permanent collection. Plan about two hours. Restrooms and parking are available, the museum is listed as wheelchair accessible, and it welcomes children.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is only about 0.1 miles away, so it is easy to see both in one afternoon. LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes is about 0.6 miles away and the Chinese American Museum about 0.7 miles away, both in the historic downtown core.
