The state's Korean War memorial stands in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, IL, less than a mile off the old road, next to the Illinois memorials for World War II and Vietnam. Dedicated in 1996, it honors the 1,748 people from Illinois killed or missing in the Korean War. A tall bronze bell rising over granite carved with their names makes it a simple, dignified place to pause.
What is Korean War Memorial?
The memorial is built around a 12-foot bronze bell set on a granite base. The names of the dead and missing are cut into the granite slabs below it. Together, the bell and base form four niches, one for each branch of the armed forces of the Korean War years. Inside the bell is a carillon system that plays short music programs for visitors, so the site can fill with sound as you walk up.
Visiting Korean War Memorial: tips
A 15-minute stop is enough to read names and hear the carillon if it is playing. The memorial has its own parking area and is wheelchair accessible. The Illinois Vietnam Veterans Memorial is right beside it and the state's World War II memorial about 0.1 mile away, so plan to see all three together. The Camp Lincoln Commissary Building is about 0.3 mile off if you want one more stop nearby.
