Historic buildings on Route 66

The 168 historic buildings in our data are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and they cluster in the towns where the old road ran straight down Main Street, across 7 states. By state: Illinois 67, Missouri 29, Kansas 3, Oklahoma 17, New Mexico 7, Arizona 36, California 9.

Joliet, Illinois has a whole set — the Jacob H. Henry House, the Hiram B. Scutt Mansion, the Joliet Iron and Steel Works. Cuba, Missouri contributes a run of houses, its old city jail and the Hotel Cuba; Stroud, Oklahoma keeps the Boston Store and the Chandler Bookstore; Kingman, Arizona has more than two dozen on its own, and Winslow adds the Lorenzo Hubbell Trading Post and Warehouse. California ends with Rubel Castle and the old adobes around Pasadena. Almost every one is within a mile of the road — the typical distance is about 0.2 mi.

Practical hint: most of these are private homes or working businesses, so enjoy them from the sidewalk, and look for the small plaque by the door — it usually gives the year and the story in a sentence or two.
