The Selig Zoo was an animal collection in Los Angeles, about a mile off the old road, that operated roughly from 1911 to 1940. Col. W.N. Selig ran it both as a tourist attraction and as a source of animals for films made by his Selig Polyscope Company. It changed names several times over the years. The zoo is long gone, so this is a stop for history, not sightseeing.
What is Selig Zoo?
Selig's films often starred animals; after Westerns, animal pictures were his company's second most popular kind of movie. Over the years the zoo also went by Zoopark, Luna Park Zoo and California Zoological Gardens, and it ended up as Lincoln Amusement Park.
