Fair Oaks Pharmacy

Fair Oaks Pharmacy is a working drugstore and old-fashioned soda fountain in South Pasadena, CA, on the corner of Mission Street and Fair Oaks Avenue, the old Route 66. It opened in 1915, and today the counter serves hand-dipped shakes, phosphates, egg creams and ice cream sodas next to a compounding pharmacy and a shop of retro candy and toys. In 2017 a Route 66 shield was painted on the street outside to mark the old road.

History of Fair Oaks Pharmacy

Local investor Gertrude Ozmun started and financed the drugstore in 1915 as the South Pasadena Pharmacy, in a building designed by Arthur Benton. It was the Raymond Pharmacy in the 1920s and 1930s and took the Fair Oaks name in the early 1940s.

In the early 1990s the soda fountain was restored with an old fountain brought from Joplin, Missouri. In 2005 the Shahniani family took over from owners Michael and Meredith Miller.

Fair Oaks Avenue carried the early Route 66 alignment south through South Pasadena; a later alignment used the Arroyo Seco Parkway, opened in 1940.

Visiting Fair Oaks Pharmacy: tips

Look for the Route 66 shield painted on Fair Oaks Avenue beside the pharmacy, added by the city and the California Historic Route 66 Association for the road's 90th anniversary.
