Barack Obama Presidential Center

Opened to the public on June 19, 2026, the Juneteenth holiday, this museum, library and community campus stands in Chicago, IL, about 6 miles off the old road. It commemorates Barack Obama, the nation's 44th president, and his years in office. Set on the South Side, in Jackson Park, it is one of the newest major museums a Route 66 traveler can visit before leaving Chicago.

What is Barack Obama Presidential Center?

The center spreads over a 19.3-acre campus beside the University of Chicago. Besides the museum it holds community and conference spaces, a Chicago Public Library branch, an athletic facility for the neighborhood, and landscaped parkland with gardens and a playground. The nonprofit Obama Foundation runs it and has its home there.

The buildings were designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, with landscape work by Michael Van Valkenburgh. Visitors come in through John Lewis Plaza, the main entrance. The university helps with planning, programs and community work.

History of Barack Obama Presidential Center

A dedication ceremony took place on June 18, 2026, and the doors opened the following day. The project also aims to produce the first presidential library to be fully digitized, working with the National Archives. The Archives has loaned documents and artifacts for display, while the originals are kept at a separate facility. The records include more than 600 cubic feet of audiovisual material and roughly 3 million photographs, mostly from the White House years.

Visiting Barack Obama Presidential Center: tips
