Garfield Park Conservatory
The Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the biggest glass-house conservatories in the country. It stands inside Garfield Park on North Central Park Avenue in Chicago, IL, about 2.1 miles off the old road, and it is free to visit. Opened in 1908 and run by the Chicago Park District, it is often described as landscape art under glass, and it makes a warm, green break in any season.
What is Garfield Park Conservatory?
The conservatory spreads across roughly 4.5 acres, counting its indoor rooms and outdoor gardens together. Permanent plant displays bring together specimens from many parts of the world, arranged more like landscapes than rows of pots. Among the oldest living things here are cycads, palm-like plants, some of them more than two centuries old.
It works together with its North Side counterpart in Lincoln Park to keep important plant collections and to run education and community programs for the city.
History of Garfield Park Conservatory
The conservatory dates from 1908 and was built as part of Garfield Park, a West Side pleasure ground laid out decades earlier. The Chicago Park District operates it as part of the city's park system.
Visiting Garfield Park Conservatory: tips
The conservatory is free to visit, has restrooms on site, is listed as wheelchair accessible and is well suited to children. Plan on one to two hours. It is a good choice on a cold or rainy day, since most of the displays are indoors, and it is an easy place to rest after a long drive. Leave extra time for the outdoor gardens, which are part of the roughly 4.5 acres, and look for the old cycads, some of which have been growing for over two centuries.
The rest of Garfield Park surrounds the building. The Ukrainian National Museum is about 1.8 miles away and Hawthorne Works about 2.8 miles away. Coffee is within about 0.1 mile, and EV charging is about 0.9 mile away.
