Hyde Park Art Center
The Hyde Park Art Center is a nonprofit devoted to the visual arts, and no alternative exhibition space in Chicago is older. Since 2006 it has been based on South Cornell Avenue in Chicago, IL, a short way north of Hyde Park Boulevard in the Kenwood neighborhood, about 5.2 miles off the old road. It is a good stop for travelers who like to see what local artists are making now.
What is Hyde Park Art Center?
An alternative exhibition space is a gallery that works outside the traditional museum system, often showing newer or experimental art. The center focuses on the visual arts and has played that role in the city longer than any similar venue. The organization itself traces its start to 1939, well before its move to the present building.
Visiting Hyde Park Art Center: tips
The center is listed as wheelchair accessible and has parking. Allow under an hour for the galleries. Gas and food are both within about 0.1 mile, and a hotel is about 0.2 mile away.
The Kenneth C. Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is about 0.9 mile away, the Smart Museum of Art about 1 mile and the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures about 1.1 miles, so it is easy to combine with other South Side museums in a single day.
