Bhagavad-gita Museum

The Bhagavad-gita Museum is a multimedia art museum in Los Angeles, CA, in the West Los Angeles area about 1.8 miles off the old road. Established in 1977, it sets out to illustrate the philosophy of the Bhagavad-gita, largely through dioramas. It is owned and run by ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness). Near the western end of Route 66, it is one of the more unusual museum stops in the city.

What is Bhagavad-gita Museum?

The official name is Diorama-museum of Bhagavad-gita. It also goes by a second name, the First American Transcendental Exhibition, shortened to FATE. Rather than displaying objects in cases, it uses dioramas and other multimedia pieces to present the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita as a series of scenes.

The museum dates from 1977 and belongs to ISKCON, which also operates it. That makes it both an art museum and a window into the beliefs of the community behind it.

Visiting Bhagavad-gita Museum: tips

Plan on a short detour of about 1.8 miles from the old road. Allow about an hour to take in the displays at an easy pace.

The Museum of Jurassic Technology is only about 0.1 miles away, so the two pair naturally into one stop. The Museum of Tolerance is about 2 miles off, and Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, a large hillside park, is about 2.2 miles away. Govinda's Buffet is roughly 0.1 miles from the museum for a meal.
