Fowler Museum at UCLA

The Fowler Museum at UCLA is a campus museum in Los Angeles, CA, about 2.2 miles off the old road. It looks at art and material culture, mainly from the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, both historic and contemporary. Two permanent exhibitions sit alongside four galleries of changing shows. At the western end of Route 66, it offers a look at cultures far beyond the American highway.

What is Fowler Museum at UCLA?

Known simply as the Fowler, the museum sits on the north side of the Westwood campus, next door to Glorya Kaufman Hall and Royce Hall. Its focus is broad: art and the objects people make and use, drawn mostly from the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, and spanning past and present.

Two exhibitions are permanent. Four more galleries host temporary shows, often several at once, so the museum changes from visit to visit. The building also hosts lectures, concerts, art workshops, family programs and festivals, and it publishes books as well. Its lowest floor is home to UCLA's Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, so research and display share the same address.

History of Fowler Museum at UCLA

The museum dates from 1963. Over the years it has carried other names, first the Museum of Cultural History, then the Fowler Museum of Cultural History, before settling on its current title. Today it operates under UCLA's arts and architecture school. Besides its exhibitions, the museum also works as a publisher, and it publishes books as well as exhibitions.

Visiting Fowler Museum at UCLA: tips
