El Morro Theater, a two-story movie house in Gallup, NM, was built in 1928 and was singled out for its architecture: no other building in Gallup uses the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Carl Boller, one of the Boller Brothers architects, designed it. It joined the National Register in 1988 and is one of the landmarks of downtown Gallup's historic district, an easy stop for Route 66 travellers walking the old town center.
What is El Morro Theater?
A two-story theater building topped by a barrel-vaulted roof. The design came from Carl Boller, working for the firm Boller Brothers, and its Spanish Colonial Revival look sets it apart from every other building in town. It is also counted among the separately listed landmarks inside the Gallup Commercial Historic District.
Visiting El Morro Theater: tips
Admire the facade from the public sidewalk; a few minutes is enough for photos. Pair it with a walk past the other listed buildings downtown, such as the White Cafe and the Drake Hotel.
