The Hoblit House, on College Avenue in Lincoln, IL, less than a mile off the old road, is an Italianate home from 1874. Architect George W. Gale designed it for Harrison and Matilda Schuler, and banker Frank Hoblit bought it in 1882 and lived here for more than 30 years. It stands close to the Stephan A. Foley House, so two historic homes fit in one short stop.
What is Hoblit House?
The house follows the Italianate style. Its plan is shaped roughly like a cross and is not symmetrical, which gives it a lively outline from the street. The windows are tall, narrow and arched, the cornice carries decorative brackets, and quoins trim the corners of the walls.
History of Hoblit House
Harrison and Matilda Schuler had the house built in 1874. In 1882 it was bought by Frank Hoblit, a well-known Logan County banker, who kept it until he died in 1914. It joined the National Register in 2007.
Visiting Hoblit House: tips
The house is not listed as open to visitors; view it from the street and respect the owners' privacy. A few minutes is plenty for a look at the windows and brackets. The Stephan A. Foley House is about 0.1 mile away, the Lincoln courthouse square about 0.5 mile and the Postville Courthouse State Historic Site about 1 mile, so it slots easily into an hour or two in Lincoln.
