Historic districts on Route 66
Historic districts are whole blocks or neighborhoods listed together, and 37 of them lie along Route 66 in 6 states. By state: Illinois 15, Missouri 7, Oklahoma 2, New Mexico 4, Arizona 7, California 2.
They are the easiest way to see an old Route 66 downtown in one walk: the Williams Historic Business District and the Seligman Commercial Historic District in Arizona, the Kingman Commercial Historic District, the Gallup Commercial Historic District in New Mexico, the Carthage Courthouse Square and Joplin Downtown districts in Missouri, and Sayre Downtown in Oklahoma. Illinois has residential and canal-era districts around Joliet, Lockport and Lemont, plus Franklin Square in Bloomington. The Painted Desert Community Complex near Holbrook and La Posada in Winslow are the two most unusual entries. Nearly all sit right on the road, typically about 0.2 mi off.
Practical hint: park once and walk — a downtown district is usually four to six blocks long — and go in the late afternoon, when the brick fronts catch the light and the neon comes on.
