Hollywood Heritage Museum

The Hollywood Heritage Museum sits on Highland Avenue in Hollywood, about 2 miles off the old road on the final run toward Santa Monica, CA. It occupies the Lasky-DeMille Barn, now restored, directly across from the Hollywood Bowl, and it has been a museum since 1985. Inside are photographs, props and papers from the silent-film era. For Route 66 travelers ending the trip in Los Angeles, it shows how the movie business began.

What is Hollywood Heritage Museum?

The museum, sometimes called the Hollywood Studio Museum, fills a single historic building: the Lasky-DeMille Barn. Its displays center on the earliest years of the movies. Visitors find archive photos from silent-film days, props, historic documents and other film memorabilia.

A second theme is Hollywood itself. Old photographs and postcards show the neighborhood's streets, buildings and homes during its golden age, a useful picture of the town before it became the busy district seen today.

History of Hollywood Heritage Museum

Hollywood Heritage, Inc. was formed in 1980 to protect and restore early Hollywood landmarks. Its first big project was the barn. The group acquired it in February 1983, moved it to its current spot and restored it, and the building was dedicated as a museum on December 13, 1985.

The group also runs a series called Evenings at the Barn, open to the public, with talks, screenings and slideshows about early Hollywood. Now and then silent films are shown with the Silent Society.

Visiting Hollywood Heritage Museum: tips

The museum is about 2 miles from the old road. Admission is not free. Allow about an hour for the exhibits, longer for an evening program.

Several other movie-themed stops are close. The Hollywood Wax Museum and the Hollywood Museum are each about half a mile away, and Madame Tussauds Hollywood is about 0.6 miles off, so it is easy to build a whole Hollywood afternoon around this one small museum.
