The Los Angeles Fire Department's museum fills Old Engine Co. No. 27, a historic firehouse on Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA, about a mile off the old road. Inside are vintage fire engines and equipment, some from the 1880s. Out front, a memorial honors every Los Angeles firefighter who died on duty. It is a good family stop and a change of pace from film-themed Hollywood.
What it is
The building is Fire Station No. 27, designed by Peter K. Schabarum in a blend of Renaissance Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles. The station now holds the museum's collection of old fire engines and firefighting apparatus. There is also a reference library and a fire safety learning center.
In front of the station stands the Fallen Firefighters Memorial: a wall naming all of the city's firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty, together with five life-size firefighter statues.
A bit of history
The city named the station a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976, and it was added to the National Register in 1985. Today it serves as the fire department's museum and memorial, keeping an old working firehouse in public use and giving the department's history a permanent home. Some of the equipment inside goes back to the 1880s, so the collection covers well over a century of firefighting in the city.
Visiting tips
The museum keeps limited opening days, so check before you go, and allow about an hour. Restrooms and wheelchair access are available, and it is suitable for children. The memorial stands in front of the station, facing the street, and is worth a quiet moment.
The Pickford Center is about 0.2 miles away, and the Psychiatry: An Industry of Death museum about 0.3 miles off. Coffee is about 0.1 miles away, a hotel is close by, and fuel is about 0.4 miles off.
