What it is
The museum's collection is huge: close to 35 million specimens and objects, telling a story that stretches over 4.5 billion years of natural and human history. Only part of it is on public display. Much of the rest is research material, kept both in the building and at other sites.
Among its treasures is Kyawthuite, described as the rarest gemstone on Earth. The museum also has a sister institution elsewhere in the city, the Page Museum in Hancock Park, home of the La Brea Tar Pits, and the two work toward a shared mission.
A bit of history
The museum dates from 1913. Its building is in the Mediterranean Revival style and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so the architecture is part of the visit along with the exhibits.
