J. Paul Getty Museum

The J. Paul Getty Museum, usually just called the Getty, is an art museum in Los Angeles, CA, about 3.3 miles off the old road at its Getty Center campus. It is spread over two sites: the Getty Center in Brentwood and the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. Both are free to visit. At the very end of Route 66, it offers two quite different museum days within a short drive of each other.

What is J. Paul Getty Museum?

The Getty is one museum split between two campuses, each with its own focus. The Getty Center stands on a cliff above the Sepulveda Pass in Brentwood. Its galleries hold European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts and decorative arts made before the 20th century, along with photographs from the earliest days of the medium to the present, gathered from many countries.

The Getty Villa, the museum's first home, overlooks the Pacific in Pacific Palisades. It is devoted to the art of ancient Greece, Rome and Etruria. Its operator, the J. Paul Getty Trust, is often described as the richest art institution anywhere.

History of J. Paul Getty Museum

The museum dates from 1974 and is named for J. Paul Getty. Its first home was the Villa by the ocean. The later hilltop campus in Brentwood was designed by the architect Richard Meier and gave the collection a second home.

Visiting J. Paul Getty Museum: tips

The Getty Center campus is about 3.3 miles from the old road. Both locations are free, and the Center has restrooms and wheelchair access, and it is suitable for children. Plan at least half a day to see both sites.

The Restaurant at The Getty Center is right on the grounds. From there, the Fowler Museum at UCLA is about 1.9 miles away and the Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden about 2 miles off. Hotel Angeleno is about half a mile away for an overnight stay.
