Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden

The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden, a 7-acre garden in Los Angeles, CA, fills the southeastern corner of the UCLA campus about 1.7 miles off the old road. More than 3,000 species of plants grow on the grounds, and it is free to visit. No other public botanical garden in greater Los Angeles can say that. For Route 66 drivers nearing the Pacific, it offers a green, unhurried break from city traffic.

What is Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden?

Its 7 acres sit at the southeastern edge of UCLA, home to a collection of more than 3,000 plant species. The garden is run by the university, and Victoria Sork serves as its director.

It is named for the botanist Mildred Esther Mathias Hassler, who lived from 1906 to 1995.

Visiting Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden: tips

The garden is a short detour, about 1.7 miles from the old road on the last stretch toward Santa Monica. It is free to visit, there are restrooms on site, the grounds are wheelchair accessible, and it works well for a family stop with children. Allow 30 minutes to an hour for an easy loop.

Two art stops are within walking distance: the Hammer Museum and the Fowler Museum at UCLA are each about half a mile away. The Franklin D. Murphy Sculpture Garden is roughly 0.7 miles off. Revive Cafe, about 0.1 miles away, is the closest place for a bite.
