Lazy A Motel

The Lazy A Motel in Springfield, IL, is a small family-style motel from the late 1940s that stands on an older Route 66 alignment, less than a mile from the main route line through town. It no longer takes guests; the rooms have been turned into apartments. Its stucco walls and U-shaped layout still show what a modest roadside stay looked like when the highway was busy.

What is Lazy A Motel?

The motel has 13 rooms set around a U-shaped court, with a garage placed between units so guests could park under cover. The style is Southwestern Vernacular: stucco walls, a flat tile roof, and railings and fittings of cast iron.

History of Lazy A Motel

It was built in 1948 and 1949, when mom-and-pop motels lined much of Route 66. By 1994 it was one of only about two dozen motels of that kind still standing in Illinois, and it was placed on the National Register that year. After it stopped operating as a motel, the building became apartments.

Visiting Lazy A Motel: tips

People live here now, so view the building from the street and do not walk into the courtyard. A quick photo stop is all it needs. The Illinois State Fairgrounds Racetrack is about 0.3 mile away and Shea's Gas Station Museum about 0.7 mile, so it fits neatly into a short loop of old-road sights. The Air Combat Museum is about 1.7 miles off.
