Route 66 Raceway

Carrying the highway's name, Route 66 Raceway is a racing complex in Joliet, IL, less than a mile off the old road. It combines a quarter-mile drag strip with a 0.375-mile dirt oval known as Dirt Oval 66, and it is owned and run by NASCAR. It stands next to Chicagoland Speedway. For Route 66 travelers who love cars and speed, it is a fitting stop, especially on a race day.

What is Route 66 Raceway?

The complex has two tracks. The drag strip runs a quarter mile, the classic distance for straight-line racing, while the dirt oval, Dirt Oval 66, measures 0.375 miles around. NASCAR owns and operates the facility, which sits beside the larger Chicagoland Speedway.

Parking and restrooms are on site, and the venue is listed as wheelchair accessible.

Visiting Route 66 Raceway: tips

This is an event venue, so the experience depends on the racing schedule; check it before you plan a stop. On a race night, allow a few hours. On other days there may be little to see beyond the entrance and signs, which still make a good photo for anyone collecting Route 66 names along the way.

The raceway is on South Chicago Street, less than a mile from the Route 66 corridor. Joliet's historic sights are a short drive north: Joliet's East Side Historic District is about 3.9 miles away, the Jacob H. Henry House about 4.1 miles, and the Louis Joliet Hotel about 4.2 miles.
