Treece, Kansas

Treece, now a ghost town, sits in Cherokee County, KS, just over the state line from the Oklahoma mining towns, near Miami, OK, and about 5 miles off the old road. It belonged to the Tri-State Mining District and still had 138 residents in 2010. Lead pollution left behind by mining ended the town: by May 2012 it stood abandoned, and most buildings had been demolished.

What is Treece?

Two residents turned down the government buyout and were still living there in 2012; one of them died in 2016. Little of the town remains standing today.

Visiting Treece: tips

Stay on public roads and do not collect anything, since the area was abandoned over lead pollution. Picher is about 1.4 miles away, Cardin about 1.8 miles and Zincville about 2 miles.
