Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

Hollywood's Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opened in 2021 on the Miracle Mile in Los Angeles, CA, inside the May Company Building, a landmark at Wilshire and Fairfax. The Academy, the organization behind the Oscars, runs it, and it was the first large-scale film museum in the country. For Route 66 travelers ending the trip in Southern California, it is the movie capital's own tribute to filmmaking.

What is Academy Museum of Motion Pictures?

The museum is devoted to every side of moviemaking: the art, the history, the science and the people who make films. Its displays draw on part of the Academy Collection, which holds more than 52 million film-related objects and is the largest collection of its type in the world.

The building is part of the attraction. The old May Company Building stands at the corner where Fairfax Avenue meets Wilshire Boulevard, and the museum is one of several major institutions lined up along Museum Row.

History of Academy Museum of Motion Pictures

The project's roots go back to 2012, and the doors opened to the public in 2021. Rather than starting on an empty lot, the museum moved into the May Company Building, giving an older Wilshire landmark a new purpose. With its opening, the Academy gained a public home for its collection, joining an established cluster of museums on the Miracle Mile.

Visiting Academy Museum of Motion Pictures: tips

Allow two to three hours to see most of the galleries. The museum has wheelchair access, and public restrooms are listed at the Petersen Automotive Museum next door.

Museum Row makes this one of the easiest places in Los Angeles to combine several visits on foot: the Petersen and LACMA are each about 0.1 miles away. A restaurant, Fanny's, is about 0.1 miles off, and EV charging is close by. Fuel is about 0.4 miles away, and a hotel about 0.3 miles off, which helps if you plan to stay in the area overnight.
