Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California

LACMA is the county art museum of Los Angeles, CA, set on Wilshire Boulevard's Museum Row beside the La Brea Tar Pits. No art museum in the western states is bigger; it has over 150,000 works from ancient times to today, and nearly a million people visit each year. For Route 66 travelers finishing the drive, it is a place to trade highway views for world art without leaving the city's museum district.

What is Los Angeles County Museum of Art?

LACMA is a campus of several buildings rather than a single hall. The collection covers the whole history of art, from ancient objects to contemporary work, more than 150,000 pieces in all. Beyond exhibitions, the museum runs film and concert series, so a trip here can take in a screening or a live performance as well as the galleries.

Its neighbors include the La Brea Tar Pits and the George C. Page Museum, and its own Pavilion for Japanese Art stands on the grounds.

History of Los Angeles County Museum of Art

The museum's roots go back to 1910, but LACMA as an independent institution began in 1961, when it split off from the county's combined history, science and art museum. In 1965 it moved into a new complex on Wilshire Boulevard by architect William Pereira. The collections and funding grew sharply in the 1980s, when the museum began adding buildings, and expansion has continued in the decades since.

Visiting Los Angeles County Museum of Art: tips

Allow at least two hours for a focused visit, and half a day if art is the main reason for your stop. Restrooms, wheelchair access and parking are on site, and families with children are well served.

The Pavilion for Japanese Art and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures are each about 0.1 miles away, and the La Brea Tar Pits are right next door. A restaurant is about 0.1 miles away, fuel about 0.4 miles, and EV charging about 0.2 miles, handy for a long stay in the district.
