Bissell Street Water Tower

The Bissell Street Water Tower, nicknamed the New Red, is a historic standpipe tower in St. Louis, MO, where Bissell Street meets Blair Avenue. Finished in 1886, it worked until 1912 and is one of only three historic standpipes still standing in the city. Its neighbor, the Grand Avenue Water Tower, is a few blocks away, so the pair make a quick photo detour about 2 miles off the old road.

What is Bissell Street Water Tower?

A standpipe tower is a tall column that once helped keep water pressure steady in city pipes.

The Bissell Street tower is one of the survivors. Only two others from that era remain in the city, one on Grand Avenue and one at Compton Hill. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History of Bissell Street Water Tower

Builders finished it in 1886. It stayed in use for a little over 25 years before it was retired in 1912. Its nickname, the New Red, fits the timeline: the Grand Avenue tower nearby is the older of the two.

Visiting Bissell Street Water Tower: tips

This is a look-from-outside landmark, so plan on a short photo stop. The Grand Avenue Water Tower stands only about 0.2 miles away, and seeing both takes just a few minutes more.

For a longer visit, the Griot Museum of Black History is about 1.2 miles off, and the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site about 2.3 miles.
