Dog House Drive In

Dog House Drive In is a small walk-up and drive-in hot dog stand in Albuquerque, NM, on Central Avenue, the old Route 66. Its best-known feature is the animated neon sign on the roof: a dachshund that wags its tail while eating a string of sausages. The stand also appears in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, so it draws fans of the shows as well as Route 66 travelers.

What is Dog House Drive In?

A one-story brick building with order windows and menu boards beside a parking lot, on the west edge of downtown. A long yellow sign runs along the roof. The signature order is the foot-long chile dog. The Hartley family owns and runs the place.

History of Dog House Drive In

The business says it opened in 1948, when Frank Mead started the stand at 10th Street and Central Avenue. Central had carried US 66 across Albuquerque since a 1937 realignment replaced the older route by way of Santa Fe. In the 1960s the stand moved about two blocks west to a new building near 14th Street, so both of its sites are on the old highway. Roadside photographer John Margolies photographed the sign in 1979; his picture is in the Library of Congress.

Visiting Dog House Drive In: tips

It sits right on Central Avenue, the old Route 66, so it makes an easy meal stop on the drive through town. The neon shows best after dark.
