Mary & Tito's Café

Mary & Tito's Café is a family-run New Mexican restaurant in Albuquerque, NM, on Fourth Street north of downtown. Mary and Tito Gonzales opened it in 1963, and their family still runs it. It is best known for carne adovada. Fourth Street was Route 66's first route through the city, so the café stands on the original alignment, though it opened decades after the highway moved to Central Avenue.

What is Mary & Tito's Café?

This is a plain, homey café serving New Mexican food, with little in the way of decor. The dish it is known for is carne adovada, pork slow-cooked in red chile, served as a plate, rolled into a burrito or stuffed into a turnover. The James Beard Foundation named it one of its America's Classics in 2010, and Eater put it on its 2018 list of 38 essential restaurants across the country.

History of Mary & Tito's Café

Tito Gonzales had retired from firefighting when he and his wife, Mary, opened the café. Tito was the first cook, and the recipes were his. Their daughter, Antoinette Knight, now runs it, with her sons helping to manage it.

Fourth Street carried Route 66 from 1926 until 1937, when the highway moved to Central Avenue, so the café's link to the road is the street rather than the highway years.

Visiting Mary & Tito's Café: tips

Plan it as a meal stop on the pre-1937 alignment north of downtown, then pick up Central Avenue, the later Route 66, to the south.
