Albuquerque Museum, New Mexico

The Albuquerque Museum is the city's public museum of art and history, set in the Old Town area in Albuquerque, NM. Its art galleries focus on the American Southwest, while its history galleries follow the city and its stretch of the Middle Rio Grande Valley across roughly 400 years. For a Route 66 traveller it is a good way to understand the city the old road runs through.

What is Albuquerque Museum?

A city-owned museum, run by the City of Albuquerque's arts and culture department, that puts two subjects under one roof. The art side looks at the Southwest and how the region connects with the wider world. The history side covers four centuries of local life. Permanent galleries share space with changing special exhibitions, some organized at a national or international level.

The museum dates to 1967. For years its official name ended with the words of Art and History; today it goes simply by Albuquerque Museum.

Visiting Albuquerque Museum: tips

Plan on an hour or two, more if a special exhibition catches your eye. The museum sits in the Old Town area, so it pairs naturally with a stroll through the historic district.

This corner of the city is a small museum cluster. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science and ¡Explora!, the hands-on science center, are each about 0.2 miles away. For a Route 66 photo on the way out, the Tower Court, a retro roadside stop, is about 0.4 miles from the museum.
