Historic bridges on Route 66
Bridges are a small but memorable part of the road: 17 historic bridges in our data, in 8 states. By state: Illinois 3, Missouri 2, Kansas 1, Oklahoma 3, Texas 1, New Mexico 1, Arizona 5, California 1.
Chain of Rocks Bridge at St. Louis is the famous one, a former Route 66 crossing of the Mississippi that is now a footbridge. Arizona has five between Gallup and Winslow — Querino Canyon, Sanders, Allentown, Canyon Diablo and Chevelon Creek — small concrete and steel spans from the road's early years. Illinois adds the Sugar Creek Covered Bridge near Springfield, the Camelback Bridge near Bloomington and the Ninth Street Seven Arch Stone Bridge in Joliet; Texas keeps the Route 66 bridge over the railroad at Shamrock, and Oklahoma has Bridge No. 18 at Rock Creek near Tulsa. Several are bypassed by the modern road, so the typical one sits about 0.2 mi off.
Practical hint: many of the older bridges are closed to cars, so treat them as a short walk from a pull-off rather than a crossing, and look for a fence or gate before you plan your photos.
