Armory Center for the Arts

Known simply as the Armory, this nonprofit community arts group in Pasadena, CA, runs art classes and shows contemporary art; its full name is Armory Center for the Arts. It sits just steps from the Route 66 corridor through town. Its story goes back to 1947 and the old Pasadena Art Museum, which later turned into the Norton Simon Museum, so it links neatly with other art stops on a Route 66 day.

What is Armory Center for the Arts?

The Armory is part school and part gallery. It offers arts education programs for the community and puts on exhibitions of contemporary art. There are restrooms on site.

History of Armory Center for the Arts

The organization began in 1947 as the teaching arm of the Pasadena Art Museum. After that museum shut its doors in 1974 and was reborn as the Norton Simon Museum, the classes carried on under the name Pasadena Art Workshops. In 1989 the workshops joined forces with the Baxter Art Gallery, and the combined group took the Armory name.
