Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store

The Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store in Springfield, IL, is an 1898 brick building that served its neighborhood, including many of the city's political families, until 1971. Fred Gottschalk first set up shop on the lot in 1887 and later ran the business with his son Arthur. Today it ranks among the few neighborhood grocery buildings left in Springfield, about 0.9 mile off the old road.

What is Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store?

The brick building follows the Commercial style, with a cast iron storefront at street level and a corbelled cornice along the top. Its style is usually described as Chicago School. It is a modest building, but its survival is the point: few neighborhood groceries of its kind remain in the city.

History of Fred Gottschalk Grocery Store

Gottschalk started trading here in 1887 and built the current building in 1898. The store was one of several in the area and counted prominent politicians and their families among its customers. It also took orders by telephone. Fred and his son Arthur kept it going until 1971, and it was listed on the National Register in March 1985.
