Howard K. Weber House

Standing in Springfield, IL, less than a mile off the old road, the Howard K. Weber House shows how a home could be remade over time. Its core dates to the 1840s, but its look comes from remodeling that Howard K. Weber, a well-known local banker, began in 1878. It makes a quick look for anyone touring the historic streets beside Washington Park.

What is Howard K. Weber House?

The house wears the Italianate style that was in fashion across the country when Weber remodeled it. Look for an uneven, asymmetrical layout, a low hipped roof edged with a cornice on brackets, and windows with arched tops. Later Victorian taste shows in the finer details: bay windows on the ground floor and Gothic-style trim on the upper story.

The site is older than it first appears. Items found in the basement have been dated to roughly the 1820s.

History of Howard K. Weber House

Weber bought the property and soon started a run of additions and alterations, beginning in 1878, that turned the 1840s house into the one seen today. It joined the National Register in 1979.
