The Heimberger House in Springfield, IL, is a 1915 Arts and Crafts bungalow with a clever secret: it holds two households but was designed to look like one home, so it would blend in with the street. Architect Harry Jasper Reiger gave it a low Craftsman roof, a half-timbered porch gable and skylights, unusual for a bungalow. It is a private home about 0.9 mile off the old road.
What is Heimberger House?
Look for the telltale Craftsman details: a gently pitched roof, exposed rafter tails, deep eaves and clipped gables. A large half-timbered gable shelters the front porch, which is finished with decorative tile. Skylights cut into the roof bring daylight into the inner rooms, a feature rarely found on bungalows of this type.
History of Heimberger House
The house went up in 1915 as a two-family residence, disguised as a single home so it would not stand out in a neighborhood of houses. It joined the National Register in April 2014.
Visiting Heimberger House: tips
View it from the sidewalk and respect the residents. The Gov. Richard Yates House is about 0.4 mile away, Washington Park about 0.5 mile, and the John L. Lewis House about 0.6 mile, so it fits a loop through the Springfield neighborhoods near the park.
