Grammy Museum

The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, CA, sits on Olympic Boulevard at L.A. Live, about 1.6 miles off the old road. Opened in 2008, it is a hands-on museum about the history of the Grammy Awards and the artists who have won them. Visitors find touch screens, videos and recording booths alongside costumes, instruments and handwritten lyrics. It is a lively stop for music fans at the end of Route 66.

What is Grammy Museum?

The museum aims to teach as well as entertain. Interactive screens and videos tell the story of the awards and their winners, and recording booths let visitors try their own hand.

The collection of music artifacts is the heart of the place. It includes stage costumes and instruments connected to the awards, lyrics written out by hand, records, and audio and video recordings. For anyone who spent the drive west with the radio on, many of the names will be familiar. The mix of screens and real objects means the museum works for casual visitors as well as serious fans.

History of Grammy Museum

The museum opened in 2008 as a nonprofit. Los Angeles was its first home, and the idea has since spread: Cleveland, Mississippi, now has its own Grammy Museum, and Nashville, Tennessee, has a Grammy gallery within its Musicians Hall of Fame. A related Grammy Museum Experience opened in Newark, New Jersey, in 2017.

Visiting Grammy Museum: tips

Allow about two hours, longer if you plan to spend time in the recording booths. Admission is charged, so check the museum's website before you go. Restrooms are on site, the building is listed as wheelchair accessible, and older children usually enjoy the hands-on displays.

Bob Hope Patriotic Hall is about 0.7 miles away. The Museum of Contemporary Art, about 1 mile off, and The Broad, about 1.1 miles off, make it easy to build a downtown museum day.
