Jubelt's Bakery & Restaurant

Jubelt's Bakery & Restaurant is a family-run bakery and full-service restaurant on Old Route 66 in Litchfield, IL. It traces its roots to 1922 in the coal-mining town of Mount Olive, and the Litchfield shop is the last surviving Jubelt's of a small central Illinois chain. A granddaughter of founder Paul Jubelt runs it today, and it joined the Route 66 Association of Illinois Hall of Fame in 2017.

What is Jubelt's Bakery & Restaurant?

Jubelt's is a bakery and a sit-down restaurant under one roof. The bakery turns out doughnuts, Danish, cinnamon rolls, cakes and pies, and the kitchen serves breakfast, soups, sandwiches, burgers and dinner plates, plus a drive-thru and catering. The building was once a Burger Chef fast-food restaurant.

History of Jubelt's Bakery & Restaurant

In May 1922 brothers Paul, Fred and Albert Jubelt took over a going bakery in Mount Olive, Illinois, and bread was its mainstay. A Taylorville store followed in 1950 and a Litchfield store in 1952, and later Jubelt's shops opened in Springfield, Lincoln, Carlinville, Gillespie and Staunton.

In the late 1970s the Litchfield store added sandwiches, salads and soups, and in 1982 it moved into its present building on Route 66. After Paul's son John Jubelt died in 2003 and John's son Lance in 2007, the other stores closed, leaving Litchfield as the last Jubelt's. John's daughter Jeanmarie runs it now.
