John Weir House

The John Weir House in Edwardsville, IL, dates from 1836 and is the second-oldest house in town, after the Benjamin Stephenson House. It is a two-and-a-half-story brick home in the Federal style, where Dr. John Weir saw patients with his son. The Madison County Historical Society bought it in 1963 and made it a museum. It sits less than a mile off the old road in a walkable cluster of historic buildings.

What is John Weir House?

The house is a tidy example of the Federal style. The front has five bays with the door in the center, framed by a fanlight and an arched lintel. The gable roof carries three dormers on each side, a chimney on each end and a brick cornice along the back.

History of John Weir House

Dr. John Weir owned the house and ran his medical office inside it, working alongside his son Edward until the doctor died in 1878. The Madison County Historical Society bought the property in 1963 and turned it into a museum. It joined the National Register on May 9, 1983.

Visiting John Weir House: tips

The Historical Society still owns the house. Check ahead before planning to go inside; otherwise, enjoy the brick front from the street. Fifteen minutes covers the outside.

Three more historic sites are each about half a mile away: the Berleman House, Narodni Sin and the St. Louis Street Historic District. The Benjamin Stephenson House, the only older home in town, is close by too, so you can see Edwardsville's two oldest houses in one short outing.
