Liberty Sculpture Park

Liberty Sculpture Park is a non-profit outdoor art site in Yermo, CA, beside Interstate 15 and about 3.2 miles off the old road. It works mainly as a memorial to people who died under communist governments, and most of its sculptures focus on China, Hong Kong and the struggle for representative democracy. It is an unusual, thought-provoking stop close to Calico and the Barstow area.

What is Liberty Sculpture Park?

The park is an open-air sculpture garden run by a non-profit that is independent of any government. Most of the works honor Chinese dissidents and the people who stood with them, and Hong Kong receives attention as well. One sculpture shows Nancy Pelosi and two fellow members of Congress on a trip to China to honor the demonstrators who died at Tiananmen Square in 1989.

The subject matter is political and serious, so the park reads more like a memorial than a roadside attraction. It is best approached with the same quiet attention as any memorial.

History of Liberty Sculpture Park

One of the park's statues took aim at Xi Jinping and at how his government handled COVID-19. It was destroyed in an arson attack. Within a year a replacement titled CCP Virus II was built, and it was unveiled in June 2022, timed to follow the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown by two days.

Visiting Liberty Sculpture Park: tips

The park sits right beside the interstate in Yermo, so it is easy to reach from Barstow. Parking is available, the site is listed as wheelchair accessible, and it is considered suitable for kids, though the themes may prompt questions from younger visitors. There are no restrooms on site; EddieWorld, about 0.4 miles away, has restrooms and fuel, and a ChargePoint charger is about 0.3 miles off. Allow half an hour to walk among the sculptures.

Calico is about 3.1 miles away, which makes the two an easy pairing, and the site of the former CACTUS telescope is about 2.5 miles off.
