Tapia Adobe

The Tapia Adobe site in Cucamonga, CA, honors the home of Tiburcio Tapia, a Mexican soldier and politician who went on to become a merchant, winery owner and rancher. His 1839 land grant, Rancho Cucamonga, shaped the early history of this whole area. The site is California Historical Landmark No. 360 and sits on Foothill Boulevard, close to other early Cucamonga landmarks along Route 66.

What is Tapia Adobe?

Tapia built his adobe home on the land he received from the Mexican government. The State of California named the home site a Historical Landmark on October 9, 1939. Think of it as a place to pause and picture the rancho era rather than a museum with exhibits.

History of Tapia Adobe

Tapia lived from 1789 to 1845. In 1839 Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado granted him 13,045 acres of what is now San Bernardino County. The rancho took in parts of today's Rancho Cucamonga and Upland, stretching east from San Antonio Creek to roughly present-day Hermosa Avenue, and from about Eighth Street north to the mountains.

Visiting Tapia Adobe: tips

The site lies on Foothill Boulevard, so it is an easy stop while driving the old road. A few minutes is enough here. The John Rains House is just 0.3 miles away and the Cucamonga Service Station is about 1 mile away, so the three make a compact history stop. The Sam and Alfreda Maloof Compound is about 3.7 miles away.
