Lincoln Colored Home

The Lincoln Colored Home in Springfield, IL, was among the nation's earliest orphanages serving African American children. Opened in 1898, with a full name of Lincoln Colored Old Folks & Orphans Home, it cared for residents until 1933. The present building dates from 1904 and joined the National Register in 1998. It now stands empty and in poor repair, so it is a street-side stop.

What is Lincoln Colored Home?

The Lincoln Colored Home is a house a few blocks from the Lincoln Home National Historic Site. Its longer name shows that it cared for elderly people as well as children. It matters less for its architecture than for the care it offered Black children and elders when few such places existed.

History of Lincoln Colored Home

The home opened on March 8, 1898, and ran until 1933. The original building on the site was razed, and the one standing today went up in its place in 1904. It was listed on the National Register in 1998. The building has been empty for some time and is in disrepair, though its last two owners have tried to restore it.

Visiting Lincoln Colored Home: tips

Because the building is vacant and private, view it from the public sidewalk and do not enter the grounds. It is only about 0.2 mile off the old road. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site is about 0.3 mile away, and the Cong. James M. Graham House and the Price/Wheeler House are each about 0.4 mile, so it fits easily into a walking tour.
