Fisher Building-Latham Block

The Fisher Building-Latham Block in Springfield, IL, began as two separate commercial buildings, both started in 1856 and now joined inside by connecting doorways. The larger Latham Block keeps its mid-1800s look, while the Fisher Building got a Classical Revival makeover in 1900. Listed on the National Register in 2000, it sits in the downtown core about 0.7 mile off the old road.

What is Fisher Building-Latham Block?

The Latham Block shows a typical commercial design of the mid-19th century with a classical touch, seen in its evenly spaced windows capped with cast iron hoods. The Fisher Building once matched that look, but in 1900 it was remodeled in the Classical Revival style, gaining a bay window two stories tall, an ornamental cornice and limestone trim. Because the two parts are linked inside, they are now treated as one building.

Visiting Fisher Building-Latham Block: tips

View it from the street; the contrast between the two facades is the thing to notice, one plain and classical, the other dressed up with its tall bay window. The former National Museum of Surveying site is right next door, and the Old State Capitol State Historic Site and the St. Nicholas Hotel are each about 0.1 mile away, so this is a quick stop on a downtown walk. A few minutes is plenty.
