Price/Wheeler House

Built in 1899, the Price/Wheeler House in Springfield, IL, was Springfield's earliest Classical Revival home of the turn-of-the-century era. Its two-story portico with four Ionic columns looked like nothing else in town when it went up, though the style caught on within a decade. It later belonged to former mayor and congressman Loren Wheeler. It is a private house about 0.4 mile off the old road.

What is Price/Wheeler House?

The front of the house is dominated by a two-story portico held up by four Ionic columns, topped by a frieze and a cornice trimmed with dentils. When it was built, Springfield had no other house like it. By 1910, though, the Classical Revival look had become common in the city's neighborhoods, which makes this house the trendsetter of the group.

History of Price/Wheeler House

Isaiah Price, a businessman, had the house built but died two years after it was finished. In 1904 it was bought by Loren Wheeler, a former Springfield mayor who later served as a U.S. Representative. The house was listed on the National Register in February 1985.
