What is Lockport Historic District?

The district is the old commercial heart of Lockport, where the Illinois and Michigan Canal shaped the town's growth. Nearly every building in it counts toward the listing, so the historic character runs through the whole area. The district is compact and easy to explore on foot, and most of its best-known sights are only a block or two apart.

It contains several landmarks with their own stories, from the stone Gaylord Building to the former canal office that now houses the county historical society.

Visiting Lockport Historic District: tips

Allow about an hour for a walk. The Gaylord Building and the Will County Historical Society Headquarters are each about 0.1 miles away, and the John Heck House about 0.3 miles, so the main sights can be linked in one short loop.

Park once and explore on foot. Private homes and businesses should be viewed from the sidewalk unless they are open to the public.
