Marciano Art Foundation

The Marciano Art Foundation is a nonprofit contemporary art space in the Mid-Wilshire area of Los Angeles, CA, on Wilshire Boulevard, about a mile off the old road. Maurice and Paul Marciano, co-founders of Guess, opened it in 2017 to show their collection of about 1,500 works. After a closure that began in 2019 and was at first called permanent, the museum has reopened to the public.

What is Marciano Art Foundation?

The foundation is an exhibition space for contemporary art drawn from the Marcianos' own holdings of roughly 1,500 pieces. It operates as a nonprofit and is listed as an art museum. The building stands on Wilshire Boulevard in Mid-Wilshire, east of Museum Row.

Because it grew out of a private collection, the art on view reflects the tastes of two collectors rather than a public institution's mission, which gives it a different feel from the big museums a couple of miles west on Museum Row.

History of Marciano Art Foundation

Maurice and Paul Marciano, who co-founded Guess, opened it to the public on May 25, 2017. In November 2019 it closed indefinitely after its workers tried to form a union, and a month later the foundation said the closure would be permanent. That turned out not to be the end: the museum has since reopened to visitors, and the collection is once again on public view after the long pause.

Visiting Marciano Art Foundation: tips

Entry is managed through advance reservations, so check the foundation's website and book before you drive over. Allow about an hour and a half. Restrooms, wheelchair access and parking are available, and it is suitable for children.

Craft Contemporary and the La Brea Tar Pits are each about 1.8 miles away, and the Pavilion for Japanese Art about 2 miles. A motel, the Dunes Inn, is about 0.1 miles off, and fuel and food are each about half a mile away.
