Ozymandias on the Plains, the Giant Legs to Amarillo people, is a pair of huge legs cut off at the thigh, standing in a field beside I-27 on the south edge of Amarillo, TX. Sculptor Lightnin' McDuff made it for Stanley Marsh 3, the patron behind Cadillac Ranch, and a mock historical marker claims the poet Shelley came upon these ruins here in 1819. Spray paint keeps changing its look.
What is Ozymandias on the Plains?
Two bodiless legs in an open field, often painted with graffiti and sometimes with striped athletic socks, and repainted every few months. Visit Amarillo says McDuff planned a whole figure and stopped halfway because the legs looked complete on their own.
Visiting Ozymandias on the Plains: tips
It is about 6 miles south of Route 66, down I-27, so it suits a detour from Amarillo rather than a drive-by. Pull onto the shoulder of Sundown Lane; there is no parking lot and no facilities, and the field has burrs, so wear closed shoes. Ten minutes is plenty.
