The U.S. Route 66-Sixth Street Historic District follows the main stretch of old Route 66 through Amarillo, TX, in the San Jacinto Heights neighborhood. It was listed on the National Register on August 23, 1994. The district takes in the Amarillo Natatorium and makes a natural place to slow down. For travelers following the old road, it is the easiest spot in Amarillo to drive a surviving piece of the original route.
What it is
This is a historic district rather than a single building, built along the original Route 66 corridor on the city's west side.
Visiting tips
Drive the stretch slowly or park and walk a few blocks. The Ranchotel is about 0.6 miles away. The Don Harrington Discovery Center and the Amarillo Museum of Art are each a little over 2 miles away.
