Park Lake Historic District

The Park Lake Historic District in Santa Rosa, NM, is a 25-acre park set around a lake, just off the old road. Its historic pieces include a stone storage building, stone walls and canals, a playing field and the landscaped grounds around the water. The district joined the National Register in 1996. It makes a pleasant place to stretch your legs between long stretches of highway.

What is Park Lake Historic District?

The district is a public park rather than a single building. Six parts of it count toward the historic listing. One is a building, a storage house made of stone. Two are structures: the stone walls and the canals. Three are sites: the lake itself, a playing field, and the landscaped area that rings the lake.

The stonework ties the whole place together, from the storehouse to the walls and water channels. Besides the National Register, the district is also on the New Mexico State Register of Cultural Properties.

Visiting Park Lake Historic District: tips

The park sits just off the old road through Santa Rosa and is listed as wheelchair accessible. Allow half an hour for a walk around the lake and a look at the stone walls and canals. Two historic homes are close by: the J. Julian Moise House and the Jesus M. Casaus House are each about 0.4 miles away. The Santa Rosa Route 66 Airport is about 2 miles off.
