The Blue Hole is a round, bell-shaped natural pool near Santa Rosa, NM, just off Route 66. Fed by an artesian source, it is a kind of sinkhole known as a cenote, and it draws both swimmers and scuba divers; many dive students come here to train. It once served as a fish hatchery. For Route 66 travelers it is an unusual chance to see, or jump into, deep blue water in eastern New Mexico.
What is Blue Hole?
The pool is shaped like a bell, round at the surface and wider below. Its water rises from an artesian well, and before swimmers and divers claimed it, the pool was used to raise fish.
