Western New Mexico Aviation Heritage Museum

Western New Mexico's Aviation Heritage Museum, in Milan, NM, celebrates the early pilots who flew between Los Angeles and Amarillo along one stretch of the Midcontinental Airway. It opened in 2013 at the Grants-Milan Municipal Airport, alongside a historic 1953 flight service station. For Route 66 travellers it adds an aviation chapter to a road trip, and it sits just off the old road with parking and restrooms on site.

What it is

An aviation museum focused on the people who opened the skies over western New Mexico. Its theme is the early airway pilots who carried flights on the Midcontinental Airway's Los Angeles–Amarillo leg, a route across much of the same country Route 66 connects by road.

The museum is linked with a historic building next door, known as Grants-Milan Flight Service Station and put up in 1953 to support the municipal airport shared by the neighboring towns of Grants and Milan. Flight service stations were where pilots got weather and route information before and during a trip. The station earned a National Register listing in 2015 and also appears on the state's own register of cultural properties.

A bit of history

The museum dates to July 27, 2013, making it a young institution built around an older building. Two years later, the flight service station it is tied to received national recognition as a historic place.

Visiting tips

Allow about an hour. The museum has parking, restrooms and wheelchair access, and it welcomes kids, which makes it a comfortable break on a long driving day. It is right by the old road, so no real detour is needed, and the flight service station building on the same grounds adds a second thing to look at.

Pair it with Charley's Automotive Service in Grants, a Route 66 garage about 2.1 miles away that is best seen from the street. The site of Anaconda, a vanished uranium company town, is about 6.5 miles away.
