The Allentown Bridge is an old truss bridge over the Puerco River in Houck, AZ, in Apache County, less than a mile off the old road. Dating to 1923 and listed on the National Register in 1988, it still stands, though satellite images from April 2026 show it in rather worn condition. For Route 66 travellers who enjoy early road engineering, it is one of three historic bridges in this corner of eastern Arizona.
What is Allentown Bridge?
A road bridge of the truss type, built in 1923 to carry traffic across the Puerco River. The Midland Bridge Company is connected with its history. Its 1988 listing records it as a historic crossing in Apache County.
The bridge has not been kept up like a showpiece. The most recent information, from satellite imagery in April 2026, shows that it survives but is somewhat dilapidated.
Visiting Allentown Bridge: tips
Because of its condition, look from a safe distance and do not walk or drive onto it. A brief photo stop is all it needs. Check local road conditions before heading out on back roads.
The Querino Canyon Bridge, about 5.8 miles away, and the Sanders Bridge, about 10.9 miles away, are the other listed bridges nearby, so all three can be linked in a short loop for anyone interested in early highway structures.
