The Harvey Hotel in Gallup, NM, is a two-story building from 1928 on West Coal Avenue in the heart of downtown. Its name can mislead: it was never part of the Fred Harvey Company's famous chain of railroad hotels. Instead it was a local hotel that competed with the Grand Hotel a block to the east. Listed on the National Register in 1988, it sits inside Gallup's historic commercial district.
What is Harvey Hotel?
A two-story hotel building whose front is done in the Decorative Brick Commercial style, while its walls follow what is called the Stone Commercial style. The two styles together mix brick and stone in one building.
The building is also on the New Mexico state register of cultural properties.
History of Harvey Hotel
It went up in 1928 and soon found itself competing with the Grand Hotel, one block east, for guests downtown. The name can suggest a link to Fred Harvey's well-known railroad hotels, but this one had no connection to them. It was listed in 1988.
Visiting Harvey Hotel: tips
See it from the public sidewalk and respect the property. It stands inside the Gallup Commercial Historic District, and both the Grand Hotel and the Rex Hotel are about 0.1 miles away, so an easy walk takes in its old rival too.
